Sonic Mega Collection Plus [PC - RIP] [MULTILANGUAGE]

My personal review:

Sonic goes on the PC now and it is about time for all the fans of the blue magic ball to grab it as soon as possible. I personally enjoyed the gameplay since the beginning as I am a deep fan of this series and also because you can't imagine how exciting it can be to play it for hours! After some hours you will be lost in good sensations and you will be struggling to play just a little bit more. So, I hope you can enjoy this game as much as I did! I am sure you will, anyway....

Gamespot review:

Sonic Mega Collection Plus is basically a collection of all the Sonic games for the Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive in Europe) and Game Gear, so players looking for titles like Sonic Adventure or Sonic Heroes are going to be disappointed. As such, the nostalgic value is immense - the games look, sound and play exactly like they did over a decade ago, and hold up surprisingly well against today's games.

The concept of the Sonic series is a simple one – you play as Sonic the Hedgehog or any other character depending on the game. Throughout each game, you'll pursue the evil-doing Dr. Robotnik, who keeps trapping cute little animals inside evil robots. It's your job to save these little critters and defeat Dr. Robotnik. Classic Sonic gameplay has you moving very fast across varied levels filled with loops and platforms, collecting rings as health points, destroying computer screens to gain powerups and collecting precious stones called Chaos Emeralds. This is the basis to one of the world's finest 2D-platforming series, although, as specifically apparent in some of the games offered within this compilation, it doesn't always show a pretty face.

Right out of the box, you'll get Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and various Game Gear titles such as Sonic, Sonic Drift and Sonic Labyrinth. While this is a nice roster of games, some of them, specifically the Game Gear titles and Sonic 3D Blast, don't quite hold well and drag this package down.

Once you're done with these, the only other worthwhile games you can play are Sonic & Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The latter can be replaced by any other Bubble Puzzle clone out there today, so unless you're an absolute Sonic freak, you're left with Sonic & Knuckles. The game is very good, but it can be punishing in its difficulty at times. Nonetheless, it provides an excellent challenge and the same level of great level design introduced in Sonic 3.

Once you're done with all the get-go games, you can unlock a bunch of other games, including Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic 2 & Knuckles, Blue Spheres (an entire game based on Sonic 3's sphere collecting minigame) and even other Sega classics like Ristar and Comix Zone. The problem is these unlockables require that you finish the games 20-30 times each, and that's just wrong. It's a cheap way of artificially lengthening the life of the game – as fun as these games are to play over and over again, I doubt anyone will want to crawl through Sonic 3D Blast 30 times just to play another Sonic game. On the other hand, other extras include video clips of Sonic games, scans of the original game manuals and even dozens of Sonic comic strips, so Sonic fanatics will definitely find more than their share of Sonic fun in this package.

One thing that has to be pointed out is that the Sonic series had and still has some of the best music in videogame history. It probably sounds weird, but the different soundtracks in this package are so nostalgic I sometimes find myself starting the games just to hear the music. It's really that great. Another must-mention is that Sonic Mega Collection Plus can save the day when it comes to games like Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic & Knuckles – you can now save your game wherever you want. This comes in especially handy on that lame final 3D boss or the Death Egg level of Sonic 2, and makes playing these games a much easier, enjoyable experience.

The bottom line is, even though the game requires you to do ridiculous things to get all the games and includes some questionable titles, there's still enough rocket-fast Sonic gameplay here to warrant the attention of old Sonic veterans and young gamers seeking to explore the great origins of console fun. I'd recommend getting either the PSP or PS2 version of the game, though with a good gamepad (note: there are remappable controls), the game is just as playable and loads saved games much faster on the PC. At $19.99, you really can't go wrong either way.

Good:
Loads of gameplay; outstanding music; stable and bug-free; low system requirements for PC version; the ability to save progress is extremely useful; lots of great Sonic comic strips; it's Sonic, one of the best platformers of all time.

Bad:
Game Gear titles and Sonic 3D Blast are questionable additions; requiring the player to play the games dozens of time just to unlock extras is pathetic.
